We heard the parade before we saw it — grabbed the bikes and rode straight into it. It kicks off on Anacapa, the second street in from the harbor, right at the corner store and the stop sign. We used to live right there, so I know exactly how that street behaves on the Fourth: packed by 8 a.m., lemonade stands on the corners, live bands going, decorated golf carts and a vintage VW bus rolling by covered in flags. Now we're a little further down on Van Nuys, the quiet end of the Strand — but "quiet" is relative today. Every single street on this beach runs its own mini block party. BBQs going non-stop, somebody's speaker somewhere, flags on every porch.
This is the thing people don't get from photos: Silver Strand isn't a vacation rental with good marketing. It's a real neighborhood, and today is proof. The fireworks alone ran from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., all over the Strand — and the police were out the whole time, not to shut anything down, but to keep everyone safe while they did it. At one point a cruiser rolled by and somebody lit a firecracker right in its wake. Nobody blinked. That's genuinely the vibe here — order and chaos getting along just fine.
Coastal living, homes for sale or not. That's the part that's easy to miss if you're only looking at Silver Strand Beach real estate from the outside — the market data, the comps, the "is it a good investment" spreadsheet (and trust me, I love that spreadsheet too). But days like this are the actual answer to why people move here. You're 60 miles from LA and it feels like a different coast entirely. Slower. Louder in the best way. Where a corner store two streets over is basically a landmark and the Fourth still feels like the Fourth used to.
Our daughter Lucy was in Havasu with family this year, so it was a quieter Fourth without her. Missed her the whole day — it's always more fun watching this whole scene through an eight-year-old's eyes.
By the time the sky was still going at midnight, half the Strand was locals and half were people who'd driven in just for tonight — and honestly, that's how you know a place is worth it. Nobody drives an hour for a beach that isn't special.
Before sandy feet, I had a term sheet. But days like today are exactly why I traded one for the other.
